As we were closing the Nursery about 5pm on July 3, we were
looking forward to the July 4th holiday and anticipating a cookout with family
and friends the next day. But the skies
were darkening and all of once the sky opened and pelted the Nursery with rain,
strong winds and pea-size hail. We
headed to the house but it was too late to escape the torrents of rain and
hail. Our beautiful yard and flower beds
were covered with leaves and broken limbs from our many trees. The lily pads in our pond were shredded and
the fish were hiding under the rocks.
Then back to the Nursery to
survey the damage. The green house cover
was torn and the shade cloth protecting the perennials was ripped. Many of the plants were protected, but several
were stripped of their leaves. Tree
limbs and leaves were scattered all over the nursery. It was sad to see the damage that the hail
caused, but at the same time the plants and trees were nourished by the inch of
rain that came along with the hail. The
nursery staff busily cleaned up the fallen debris and have taken care to cut
back the damaged plants. Now with some good fertilizer, the plants and flowers
and snapping back and putting on new growth and color.
